Forum Overview

In response to climate change and the increasing global emphasis on reducing carbon emissions, countries worldwide are actively developing renewable energy sources and energy-saving technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our nation's Ministry of Agriculture has established the "Climate Change Adaptation and Net Zero Emissions Project Office" to achieve the agricultural sector's net-zero target by 2050. This strategy includes reducing carbon dioxide emissions, enhancing agricultural carbon sequestration, promoting agricultural green energy, and fostering a circular economy. An essential government policy involves promoting the recycling and reuse of agricultural by-products. For example, biomass energy can replace fossil fuel-based thermal energy and power rural areas. Taiwan has abundant raw materials needed for biomass energy production, with livestock waste accounting for approximately 54% of total emissions. Changhua County, a significant livestock farming region, houses about 747,000 pigs and 30,000 cattle, producing nearly 15,000 metric tons of wastewater and 460 metric tons of solid waste daily. Effective utilization and processing of this livestock waste for biomass energy could not only achieve carbon reduction but also leverage carbon trading mechanisms, thereby supporting the development rights of the livestock industry. Therefore, this forum, jointly organized by the Changhua County Government, the Taiwan Society of Bio-Mechanics, will gather domestic and international experts, government agencies, industry representatives, livestock industry professionals, and interested public members. Discussions will cover various carbon reduction technologies in the livestock industry, the current status and trends of the domestic and international carbon trading markets, livestock waste collection and treatment, feeding management, and converting methane into renewable energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The forum aims to promote carbon reduction measures and their conversion into carbon credits, advocating for the trading of carbon credits, which can be sold to enterprises or used to offset carbon emissions. This initiative not only provides livestock farmers with additional economic benefits but also helps achieve carbon neutrality and the net-zero carbon emission goal, highlighting this new mission.
